We have provided an exceptional camp experience for over 80 years.
A week at camp for the kids we serve can change their world for the better. As a “Friend for Good” you can give a child a quality camp experience that time and time again has a positive effect for a lifetime.
Camp Goodwill is a week-long retreat for 500 children between the ages of 8 and 12. Goodwill of the Great Plains- the only Goodwill in the country to operate a camp – has held week-long camp sessions since 1927, serving over 70,000 children in that time.
Located on a Missouri River oxbow lake called Crystal Lake, the camp is used by over 3000 individuals for retreats and meetings each year in a beautiful, scenic location.
These children come from all walks of life, but have traditionally come from families with limited resources. Goodwill charges a minimal registration fee of $20 per child, a bargain compared to nearly every other camp in the Midwest, many of which cost over hundreds of dollars per week!
At Camp Goodwill, kids will find an opportunity to be a kid and have fun! They will have opportunities to garden, swim, eat ice cream, perform in a talent show and learn more about nature. They will also learn life skills that are not easily taught in school settings, such as respect for friends, socialization skills, and responsibility.
Over the years the camp has experienced numerous capital improvements. Overnight cabins have been replaced thanks to generous donors and the volunteer labors of numerous groups including firemen, Boy Scouts and Western Iowa Tech students. In 2002, a $1.3 million pool and shower facility brought a new dimension to camp, and most recently a building constructed to house a computer lab became a real plus on rainy days. In the fall of 2011, having provided children with an exceptional camping experience for over 80 years, a new multi-use building, known as the Camp Achievement Center opened, beginning a whole new chapter in Camp Goodwill’s service to the area. All thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, grants, endowments and bequests. This very practical, extremely functional and well thought out facility, houses a large multipurpose room, kitchen, safety shelter, Arts and Culture room, small conference/meeting room, offices and overnight room. Attached to the center’s south side, over-looking camp is a covered outdoor amphitheater. The Achievement Center transitioned the camp into a year-round facility, not only increasing our capacity to serve more children, but a wide variety of groups and service organizations.
