I came to Rapid City from Arizona looking for a new life, and was sleeping on an air mattress in my Grandma’s living room.
The first thing that I did was get in touch with South Dakota Vocational Rehabilitation at the Department of Human Services; after two meetings my counselor recommended that I go to the Work Adjustment Training program at Goodwill. After the WAT program I worked with an Employment Specialist at Goodwill, and was eventually hired by the City of Rapid City working at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center as a part time dishwasher (9/27/17).
Today I work full time as a Senior Dishwasher/Prep Cook, train and supervise new employees, just recently got a raise, have my own place and am able to support myself. My next goal is to register for Drivers Education and learn to drive. I will soon be taking the next step in my life and will be transitioning. Goodwill helped me learn more people skills, and helped get me out of my comfort zone.
