How to Ace Your Interview

Do your homework.

Research the company you are interviewing for and learn more about who they are and what they do. Most companies have a website full of useful information about their mission, vision, and business goals that the interviewer could ask in the interview.

Be Prepared

Learn the name of the person who will be interviewing you and know the location of the interview. If you have never been to this place before, map out your route a day or two beforehand and how long it will take you to arrive.

Be on Time.

Be at least 5-10 minutes early for every interview. This will show the interviewer you are reliable and responsible. If you arrive earlier, wait in your vehicle, and review your notes.

Dress Accordingly

Be well-groomed.

Men: Dress shirt with dress slacks. No t-shirts with printed logos, torn jeans, or tennis shoes.

Women: Nice blouse with slacks, skirt, or a modest dress with dress shoes

Avoid wearing leggings, torn jeans, and large, chunky jewelry.

Stay Focused

Be short and to the point. Stay focused on the questions being asked and do not ramble. Stay on-topic but do not go overboard on why you are the “be all, end all” for the position. Make eye contact with the interviewer and sit up straight in your seat. Try to avoid fidgeting and speak clearly. Leave your cell phone in the car or at home to eliminate distractions.

Do not Bad Mouth.

Do not talk badly about a previous employer. If you cannot say anything nice about someone, do not say anything at all.

Respect is Crucial

Treat everyone you meet with respect from the Janitor to the CEO. Offer a firm handshake and always thank the interviewer for his/her time. Write a thank-you note and send it to the interviewer as soon as possible.

Ysenia is one of the individuals whose lives have been changed through your support of Goodwill.

Ysenia works in our Sioux City store sorting clothing donations throughout the day and is working towards her goal of finding a job out in the community she is passionate about.

“I like working in the store. I love that I get the opportunity to interact and get to know people at Goodwill,” she says with excitement and a smile on her face.

Stronger communication skills is one of the essential job skills she has been working on this past year in the Pre-Vocational Job Training Program.

Goodwill’s Pre-Vocational Job Training Program teaches individuals the necessary skills to succeed in the community by providing a job experience by working in our retail stores, E-commerce, janitorial and reception desk at our Support Center.

Find Dad the Perfect Gift at the Goodwill Father’s Day Pop-Up Shop Event

Sioux City, IA – Goodwill is hosting a special Father’s Day Pop-Up Shop on Thursday, June 10th from 10am-2pm at 3100 W. 4th St. in Sioux City in the parking lot by the donation door.

Are you looking for the perfect gift for Dad this Father’s Day that will make him say, “WOW!”? Goodwill has an unbelievable opportunity to purchase fantastic gifts Dad will appreciate.

Customers will have a special limited-time opportunity to shop for one-of-a-kind Father’s Day gift ideas found only at the pop-up shop. A vintage Minnesota Vikings cooler, Mickey and Minnie Mouse Vans, and a stunning wooden deer clock are a few of the exciting gifts available for Dad. New gift ideas will be added throughout the day, and we are encouraging customers to shop early and often for the best selection.

Sweet Treats by K&B will be providing amazing food and refreshments for lunch from 11am-2pm. Items on the menu include: pulled pork sandwiches, funnel cake fries, and chicken strips.

“We are looking forward to giving our customers a unique shopping experience just in time for Father’s Day. We have many gifts perfect for any Dad donated by our wonderful donors, and we want to give our customers the best selection this Father’s Day”, Vickie, Sioux City Store Manager, explains.

Goodwill invites the community to shop at this special pop-up shop and help support Goodwill’s mission of helping individuals overcome obstacles to employment and achieve competitive employment.

In case of rain, the pop-up shop will be moved indoors, and customers will be given the chance to shop amazing Father’s Day gifts inside of our retail store.

Amy

We all want to find purpose and meaning in our daily lives. At Goodwill, our mission is to help individuals find their purpose and what they are most passionate about.

Amy is currently in the Pre-Vocational Training Program working hard on developing her valuable job skills and preparing for employment in the community. She works in both the e-store scanning books and in the retail store stocking merchandise on the sales floor.

“Working in the retail store has given me a sense of purpose. I know when I place clothing on a rack or shoes on a shelf, someone will buy it and this item will make their lives better,” Amy states with pride.

Bryce

One summer night in June, Bryce was hanging out with his friends when he was involved in a car accident where he suffered life-altering injuries.

After going through the pain and trauma of the accident, he was convinced that this was not going to keep him down.

Bryce entered the WAT Program to discover the type of employment he is physically able to do. (WAT Program is a 6-week program to assess an individual’s skills and capabilities in a work environment).

Throughout the program, Bryce has found a genuine friendship with Brian and Austin in the E-Commerce Department. They have taught Bryce valuable lessons that Bryce will always remember.

“I love the people I work with at Goodwill. Brian and Austin are amazing people. They have taught me all about hard work and respect because they exhibit these characteristics every day,” Bryce explained with a huge grin.
